As we close the chapter on 2024, I find myself in awe of how God’s grace and wisdom have guided us through another year filled with both challenges and triumphs in the realm of cybersecurity and life itself. This year has been one of growth, learning, and reflection, as we navigated evolving cyber threats, leaned into the transformative potential of artificial intelligence, and grappled with our own limitations. Through it all, I’ve been reminded that just as our faith sustains us in times of spiritual trial, it also equips us with the resilience to face the trials of the digital world.
Lessons from the Year
2024 was a year where cyber professionals were constantly on the defensive. The rise of sophisticated ransomware attacks, deepfake technology, and supply chain breaches tested the mettle of even the most seasoned cybersecurity teams. High-profile incidents, such as the misuse of generative AI in phishing schemes and the exploitation of zero-day vulnerabilities, served as stark reminders that our adversaries are unrelenting in their pursuit of disruption and gain.
But in these challenges, I found parallels to the teachings of Scripture. As I reflected on 1 Samuel 16, where God rejected Saul as king and chose David, I saw a striking lesson for us in cybersecurity: the importance of adaptability and trust. Saul clung to outdated practices, much like how some organizations cling to legacy systems and old paradigms in a rapidly changing threat landscape. God’s decision to anoint David reminds us that forward-thinking, humility, and faith in the face of change are essential. If we are to succeed, we must not only be open to new tools and techniques but also to the transformative power of collaboration and innovation.
Bridging Faith and Technology
This year, The Cyber Deacon was born out of my passion for merging two seemingly disparate worlds: my Christian faith and the cybersecurity profession. It has been a humbling experience to write (almost) weekly blogs and lead discussions that connect biblical wisdom to the challenges we face in the tech world. Whether exploring the parallels between a well-run kitchen staff and an efficient security operations center or discussing the value of spiritual armor against the “fiery darts” of cyber threats, I’ve sought to provide a fresh perspective that uplifts and inspires.
One recurring theme in my reflections this year has been resilience. Cyber professionals know that resilience isn’t just about recovering from an incident but about building systems, teams, and mindsets that can endure under pressure. Similarly, faith teaches us to trust in God’s plan and promises, even when the storms of life threaten to overwhelm us. In both realms, resilience is rooted in preparation, community, and trust—whether that trust is in your cybersecurity team or in God’s unwavering love.
The Power of Community
In 2024, I had the privilege of engaging with many of you through The Cyber Deacon community, webinars, conferences, and LinkedIn discussions. One highlight was my attendance at the T.D. Jakes International Leadership Conference, where I represented Microsoft and supported efforts to foster diversity, equity, and inclusion in tech. These moments reminded me of the power of community in driving meaningful change.
The cybersecurity field can feel isolating at times, with long hours and high stakes. But when we come together—whether in the workplace, in faith-based discussions, or in professional communities—we gain strength. Just as the body of Christ is made up of many parts working together, so too is the cybersecurity industry dependent on the unique gifts and perspectives of its members. It is my hope that The Cyber Deacon continues to be a space where those gifts can be shared, celebrated, and multiplied.
Looking Ahead to 2025
As we step into 2025, I encourage you to join me in embracing a mindset of renewal. Just as the Apostle Paul wrote in Romans 12:2, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind,” we are called to approach this new year with fresh eyes and open hearts.
For cybersecurity professionals, this means moving beyond the reactive mindset that so often dominates our work. It’s time to embrace proactive strategies that leverage the power of AI, threat intelligence, and zero-trust principles to outpace our adversaries. Let us commit to continuous learning, sharing knowledge generously, and mentoring the next generation of cyber defenders.
From a faith perspective, renewal means recommitting ourselves to God’s purpose for our lives. Whether you are leading a team, protecting a small nonprofit, or mentoring young minds, your work matters in the eyes of the Lord. Remember that every act of diligence, integrity, and compassion is a form of worship, reflecting God’s light in a world that desperately needs it.
A Vision for 2025: Faith in Action
In 2025, The Cyber Deacon will continue to be a platform for inspiration, education, and community. I am excited to expand our offerings, including virtual Chief Information Security Officer (vCISO) services for nonprofits and houses of worship through BuyMeACoffee memberships. These organizations often lack the resources to defend themselves against sophisticated threats, and it is my mission to help bridge that gap.
I also look forward to diving deeper into the intersection of AI and faith. How can we use these powerful technologies responsibly? What ethical frameworks can guide us as believers in Christ? These are the questions I aim to explore, with your input and insights.
Finally, I encourage each of you to set your own goals for 2025. Perhaps you want to deepen your technical skills, pursue a new certification, or dedicate more time to your family and spiritual growth. Whatever your goals may be, write them down, pray over them, and trust that God will provide the strength and wisdom you need to achieve them.
A Closing Word of Encouragement
As we prepare to enter this new year, I leave you with this thought: We are not alone in this journey. Just as a well-orchestrated security operations team relies on communication and trust, so too does our walk of faith require fellowship with others and reliance on God. No matter what challenges 2025 may bring, we can face them with confidence, knowing that we are equipped with both the tools of our trade and the promises of our Creator.
Thank you for being a part of this journey with me. Your support, engagement, and feedback have been a source of encouragement and growth. I look forward to walking with you into 2025, as we continue to build a community that glorifies God and strengthens our shared mission in cybersecurity.
Let’s go forth with faith, purpose, and determination. Here’s to a new year filled with innovation, collaboration, and God’s abundant blessings.
Stay vigilant. Stay faithful.
