Finding Joy in Cybersecurity: A Lesson from Ecclesiastes 3:22

Writer: Terence JacksonTerence Jackson

“So I saw that there is nothing better than that a man should rejoice in his work, for that is his lot. Who can bring him to see what will be after him?” – Ecclesiastes 3:22

In cybersecurity, much of our work revolves around protecting others from unseen threats. We monitor, detect, and respond to attacks that most people will never even know existed. It can feel like a thankless job—until something goes wrong. Then, all eyes are on us.

This reality can sometimes lead to frustration. We wonder if our efforts make a difference or if the relentless cycle of patching, securing, and responding will ever let up. But Ecclesiastes 3:22 reminds us of something powerful: our fulfillment should come from the work itself, not from the recognition of others.

Cybersecurity as a Calling

As security professionals, we are entrusted with safeguarding information, businesses, and people. This is our “lot,” as Solomon puts it. We may not control what comes next—whether a new vulnerability will be exploited tomorrow, whether an organization will invest in security as it should—but we can control our attitude toward our work.

Instead of becoming weary, we should embrace the joy of knowing that what we do matters. Every phishing email we block, every vulnerability we patch, every awareness session we teach contributes to a safer digital world.

Rejoicing in the Daily Work

Cybersecurity is not about achieving a final, unbreakable defense—such a thing does not exist. It is about constant vigilance and resilience. In many ways, it mirrors the Christian walk. We do not reach a point where we no longer need to pray, study, or resist temptation. Instead, we grow stronger through faithful, daily effort.

Likewise, in security, there will always be another risk, another incident, another lesson to learn. But we can take joy in the fact that we are part of something greater than ourselves. Our work protects livelihoods, preserves trust, and keeps people safe. That is something worth celebrating.

A Cyber Deacon’s Perspective

If you find yourself discouraged in your role, whether in cybersecurity or any other field, take a moment to reflect on why you do what you do. Are you chasing accolades? Are you hoping for someone to finally acknowledge your hard work? Or are you rejoicing in the fact that God has given you a role that makes a difference?

Security work may never be glamorous, but it is meaningful. Just as faith calls us to serve without always seeing the immediate reward, cybersecurity calls us to protect even when our efforts go unnoticed. And in that, we can find joy.

So, as you log in for another day of assessments, alerts, and adversaries, remember: your work is valuable, and God sees your efforts. Rejoice in the work, for it is your lot.

Stay vigilant, stay faithful, and keep securing the digital kingdom.
